“When I was referred to the Lovelace Breast Care Center after finding a lump in my breast last November, I couldn’t believe the doctor when he told me I had breast cancer. Before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I lost 40 pounds after deciding last year before I turned 69, that I needed to live a healthier lifestyle. I couldn’t believe after losing all of that weight that I would be told I had cancer. But thankfully, it being in the best shape in 30 years really helped me make it through it and helped a lot with my mental state. My breast care coordinator, Sandra, was great and made sure I got answers to everything I needed. She also put me in touch with support groups and Yoga for Survivors. I started going to yoga before I had my mastectomy in February to make sure I stayed healthy. My surgery went well and I loved my surgeon Dr. Calvin Ridgeway. After surgery, I was referred for lymphedema therapy at Lovelace Women’s Hospital’s Outpatient Rehabilitation clinic. I really liked how everything was conveniently located. If it wasn’t already in the building, it was just across the street. Now my main focus is preventing cancer again and focusing on my nutrition. I would say the best part through all of this is that I feel like I am a part of a little family now. I still go to Yoga for Survivors every Tuesday, and because I’m already in the hospital, I stop in and say hi to everyone at the center. They all still know my name and like to hear updates on how I am doing. ” - Dale Haas, Lovelace Women’s Hospital Breast Care Center Patient #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth
